A Visit from the Gardaí

We had some very important visitors in Junior Infants.

Garda Shane came to see us and talk about the wonderful work that the Garda Síochána do in our community.  We got to try on a Garda hat and jacket. We also had one member of our class handcuffed! Garda Shane brought us a riot helmet to look at and it was VERY heavy! We also had a chat to Garda Ciara over the police radio and played with a powerful torch. We went outside to see the patrol car and had a great time setting off the siren and the lights!

Garda Orla was outside with her partner Donagh…the big surprise was that Donagh is a horse! He is an Irish Draught horse. They are very tall and strong. Garda Orla can see further when she is high up on his back. We all got to pet him and he was very gentle and well-behaved. Ms Kelly even got up on his back! She decided to stick to being a teacher though.

Junior Infants – Active School Week

post nua 016

We had lots of fun during Active School Week. Ali Flood, a dance teacher, came to our school and we learned a dance to Uptown Funk. In class, Ms Kelly taught us the Macarena and we revised the Birdie Dance which we learned earlier in the year. The whole school had a Drop Everything and Dance Day where Ms Friel would play music over the intercom and we had to get up and boogie! It was great fun. We also went outside and danced in the sunny yard.

Our class teamed up with Ms Mc Hugh’s 3rd class. They taught us lots of fun playground games in small groups. We really enjoyed it!

We decided to make homemade butter using cream and a pinch of salt.  It took a lot of shaking to separate the cream into a solid (butter) and a liquid (buttermilk) but we were eventually successful!

We saved the buttermilk and made soda bread the next day in the staff room.  Everyone had to help stir the thick bread dough. Our arm muscles are super strong now! We made two loaves which we enjoyed the following day during our Teddy Bears’ Picnic with our homemade butter and some jam as a little treat. Delicious!

Visit from An Garda Síochána to Junior Infants

On Friday the 15th May we had a visit from our local Garda, Garda Shane. Garda Shane explained the role of the Gardaí in the community to us. He showed us the different utensils he uses everyday in his job. We got to try on the Garda high-vis jacket and Garda hat. Garda Shane even pretended to use the handcuffs on one of the girls in our class! We explored the Garda car and had great fun turning the sirens and lights on and off and using the loud speaker. The day was topped off by a visit from the Garda Horse, Donagh. We learned about why the Gardaí use horses and how they are cared for. Have a look at our gallery below of our day with the Gardaí:
